About Vivaldi

Vivaldi is a desktop, Android, iOS, ChromeOS and in-car browser built by Vivaldi Technologies AS, an Oslo-headquartered company founded in 2013 by Jon von Tetzchner (co-founder and former CEO of Opera Software), Tatsuki Tomita and Anne Christiansen. The stable browser shipped on 2016-04-06 and reached roughly 4 million active users by May 2026.

Vivaldi has no external investors and states it is co-owned by its approximately 50 employees. The customer-data control plane (Sync, Vivaldi.net Webmail, Translate, Social Mastodon, Forum, Account auth, telemetry, corporate mail) runs entirely on servers operated by Hringdu in Reykjavik, Iceland. The browser builds on Chromium's Blink and V8 engines (BSD-3 open source) plus Vivaldi-authored C++ backend code published under BSD-3; the UI layer is proprietary.

Features

  • Free desktop (Windows / macOS / Linux), Android, iOS / iPadOS, ChromeOS and Vivaldi Automotive in-car browser builds
  • Tab stacks, workspaces, panels, notes, calendar, mail, feeds and translate built in; all features free
  • Customer-data plane (Sync, Webmail, Translate, Mastodon, Forum) hosted at Hringdu in Reykjavik, Iceland
  • Open-source under BSD-3: source tarballs of every release since v1.0.303 (2016) at vivaldi.com/source/; UI layer is proprietary
  • Telemetry minimal: once-per-day pseudonymous ping with version, CPU arch and screen resolution; no PII
  • Built-in Proton VPN free tier in Vivaldi 7.x desktop; only the account-recovery email is shared with Proton at signup
  • Free Vivaldi.net account bundles Webmail, Mail, Calendar, Translate, Mastodon and Forum on Iceland-hosted infrastructure
  • Built-in DuckDuckGo Tracker Radar ad / tracker blocker; lists bundled on-device, updated per release (no remote calls)

Full European control

Vivaldi Technologies AS (Brønnøysund 912 309 975) is a Norwegian aksjeselskap with no external investors. The company stated in its February 2025 UK CMA submission verbatim: 'It has no external investors and is co-owned by its approximately 50 employees.' Founder Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner (Icelandic-Norwegian dual citizen, co-founder and former CEO of Opera Software 1995-2010) bootstrapped the company from his own funds in 2013; no venture capital round has been raised. Approximately 20 former Opera employees joined Vivaldi at founding. Satellite offices exist in Reykjavik (Innovation House Iceland, Eiðistorg 13-15, founded by Jon von Tetzchner himself) and in the United States (personal residences of CEO and COO), but no separate US legal entity has been disclosed.

Fixed region

Customer-data control plane (Sync, Vivaldi.net Webmail, Vivaldi Translate, Vivaldi Social Mastodon, Forum, Account auth, telemetry endpoint, corporate mail) runs on infrastructure operated by Hringdu hf. in Reykjavik, Iceland -- explicitly named in the Sync privacy policy. The legal entity (data controller) is Norwegian. The Norwegian legal entity is the data controller but does not host customer data; storage is in Iceland only. Both Norway and Iceland are EEA via EFTA and covered by GDPR. Sync data retained up to a year from last activity; crash logs 60 days; vivaldi.net Webmail logs up to 3 months; account closure deletes data immediately from production servers.

Hosting infrastructure

Website: WordPress on Cloudflare for vivaldi.com marketing site (server header cloudflare, HSTS preload, CSP upgrade-insecure-requests observed via curl)

Application: Hringdu hf. data centres in Reykjavik, Iceland for all customer-data subdomains (sync, imap, smtp, pop3, webmail, forum, social, mxi-1, mxi-2, update, newsletter). RIPE-registered as 31.209.137.0/24 / AS51896 to Hringdu, Ármúli 23, 108 Reykjavik. SPF on both vivaldi.com and vivaldi.net restricted to Iceland IPs only; DMARC p=reject on both domains.

Email: Self-hosted MX (mxi-1.vivaldi.net, mxi-2.vivaldi.net on Hringdu Iceland) for the vivaldi.net community service and mail.vivaldi.com for corporate mail; Microsoft 365 domain verification TXT present on both domains (likely internal SSO) but no customer-data path

Questions & Answers

6 questions

Where is Vivaldi headquartered, and where is my browser data stored?

Vivaldi Technologies AS is a Norwegian aksjeselskap (private limited company) registered at Mølleparken 6, 0459 Oslo, with Brønnøysund organisation number 912 309 975. The EULA is governed by the laws of Norway with the Oslo City Court as the exclusive forum. Most of your browser data (bookmarks, history, passwords, open tabs, notes, themes, mail messages stored locally) stays on your device. The customer-data control plane that does touch a server -- Vivaldi Sync, Vivaldi.net Webmail, Vivaldi Translate, Vivaldi Social, Forum, the once-per-day telemetry endpoint and corporate mail -- runs on infrastructure operated by Hringdu hf. in Reykjavik, Iceland. The Sync privacy policy states verbatim: 'Vivaldi's servers are hosted at the Hringdu data centers in Iceland.' Both Norway and Iceland are EEA/EFTA jurisdictions covered by GDPR.

Who owns Vivaldi?

Vivaldi is employee-owned with no external investors. The company's February 2025 submission to the UK Competition and Markets Authority states verbatim: 'It has no external investors and is co-owned by its approximately 50 employees.' Vivaldi was bootstrapped by Jon von Tetzchner (Icelandic-Norwegian dual citizen, co-founder and former CEO of Opera Software) from his own funds in 2013; no venture capital round has been raised. The other co-founders are Tatsuki Tomita (COO, previously SVP at Opera) and Anne Christiansen (Head of Office). There is no Luxembourg or Cayman holding entity above the Norwegian operating company.

Is Vivaldi open source?

Partially. The browser is built on Chromium's Blink rendering engine and Google's V8 JavaScript engine, both BSD-3 open source. Vivaldi-authored C++ backend code is also published under BSD-3 as full source tarballs for every release since version 1.0.303 (2016) at vivaldi.com/source/. The UI layer (HTML, CSS and JavaScript for the desktop and Android shells) is proprietary -- Vivaldi self-reports the split as roughly 92% open Chromium / V8, 3% open Vivaldi C++ and 5% proprietary UI. There is no fully reproducible build of the official Vivaldi binary from public sources alone. On iPadOS and iOS the rendering engine is Apple's WebKit per the platform's pre-DMA-compliance restriction.

Is Vivaldi subject to US legal process?

The Vivaldi Technologies AS legal entity is Norwegian and has no US filing subsidiary; CEO Jon von Tetzchner and COO Tatsuki Tomita have personal residences in the United States but no corporate entity has been disclosed. The customer-data control plane -- Sync, Webmail, Translate, Mastodon, Forum, Account auth, telemetry -- is in Iceland under Norwegian law and is not directly reachable by US legal process. Optional browser-client integrations do flow to US providers when you use them: Google Safe Browsing (URL-hash lookups, on by default), the search engine you select in the address bar (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, Qwant, Startpage, Yahoo!, Yandex), Akismet (Automattic) anti-spam on the forum and Stripe for the donation page. None of those touch the encrypted sync payload, the webmail server or the translate runtime.

Does Vivaldi offer a Data Processing Agreement for business customers?

No. Vivaldi is a consumer browser product with no enterprise tier and no business-customer relationship; it is the data controller for the limited personal data its Vivaldi.net account services collect, not a processor handling business-customer data. There is no public DPA template and the EULA is the only customer-facing contract. A procurement-grade buyer integrating Vivaldi into a workplace fleet would rely on the privacy policies at vivaldi.com/privacy/ rather than a signed Article 28 instrument.

How does Vivaldi make money if the browser is free?

Vivaldi's published business model is search and partner revenue. The company states verbatim on its business-model blog: 'Every time you search using one of the pre-installed search engines, you're helping us grow, one search at a time. Currently, we work with DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, Qwant, Startpage, Yahoo! and Yandex.' Google is explicitly noted as the exception -- Vivaldi does not earn revenue when a user searches with Google. Other revenue lines include partner Speed Dial bookmarks (Booking.com, eBay, Kayak, Amazon), Direct Match sponsored URL suggestions, Proton VPN Plus revenue share since March 2025, and user donations processed through Stripe.
